September 19, 2009Below is the second issue of the Franciscan Conservative. This week’s issue features articles on the 9/12 March, the ACORN scandal, cap and trade legislation, health care, and the superiority of capitalism. Please send any articles or letters to fuscollegerepublicans@gmail.com.
Letter to the Franciscan Administration
September 14, 2009Below is a letter that was sent to our President, Father Terence Henry, TOR, regarding the Festa d’Italia being held on the eighth anniversary of September 11th. The letter was signed by the Executive Board of College Republicans and Franciscan’s Knights of Columbus chapter. We felt that it was inappropriate to hold a celebration of another culture on a somber day of remembrance.

Looking Ahead: Fall 2009
August 3, 2009What did we do the last two semesters?
2008 Election: We campaigned for John McCain and Sarah Palin first and foremost. We were able to attend three campaign rallies, one of which was held in downtown Steubenville. Many of us had the chance to meet McCain and Palin. We phone-banked for both the national ticket and the local candidates. We hosted a local candidates forum, as well as debate watching parties. At our kickoff meeting we watched John McCain’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention. We registered hundreds of new voters on campus, and turned out the student body on Election Day. We lost Jefferson County by just fifty votes…a huge gain from 2004.
Conferences we attended:
Susan B. Anthony List Pro-Life Training Academy (held on campus)
Students for Life of America Conference (Washington, D.C.)
CPAC: Conservative Political Action Conference (Washington D.C.)
Events we sponsored:
Ohio Statewide Students for Life Conference (first annual
Support Our Troops Care Packages Drives
Lemonade Stimulus Stand (government bailout protest)
Ronald Reagan Birthday Party
Voter Registration Drives
9/11: Never Forget Project (4,000 flags placed around campus)
Support Our Troops Week (4,000 flags placed around campus)
Campaigns we worked on:
John McCain/Sarah Palin 2008
Keith Fimian for Congress (Northern VA)
Melissa Hart for Congress (Western PA)
Dick Stobbs for Congress
Tim Ginter for State Senate
Dan Jenkins for State House
Pat Herrity for County Chair (Northern VA)
What do we have planned for Fall 2009?
We plan on making at least two out-of-state trips to campaign for pro-life, Catholic conservatives: Bob McDonnell and Bobby Schilling.
Bob McDonnell is running for Governor in Virginia. He is the former Attorney General and a former state senator. Political pundits across the country will be watching this race very closely. There are only two big elections in 2009; the Governor’s races in Virginia and New Jersey. This is our chance to prove that Virginia can stay red, and Republicans can still achieve victory. This is the most important race in the country. We are tentatively planning this trip for Fall Break (October 29-November 1st). We will have more information as the trip gets closer.
Bobby Schilling is running for Congress in Illinois. He is the father of nine children, and his oldest son Terry is a Franciscan grad and former CR executive board member. Bobby is running because he believes that our country needs to return to traditional values. We know that if we elect Bobby, he will lead the fight in Congress on pro-life issues. We plan on making a weekend trip, during which we will distribute literature at Catholic churches.
Voter registration drives: We want to specifically target students for Virginia and New Jersey in order to get them absentee ballots for the election. While we usually encourage students to register in Ohio, it is extremely important that we win those two governorships.
G-20 Summit Protest: We will be working with Students for Life to arrange protests at the G-20 Summit set to take place in Pittsburgh in September. We would like to make it clear to President Obama and other world leaders that we do not support abortion anywhere in the world, and that the United States’ sovereignty must be respected.
September 11th Memorial: This has been an ongoing project over the last few years. We place 4,000 flags around the sidewalks on campus to remember those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks. It is a somber memorial, and one that is much appreciated on campus. We also hold a small prayer service to pray for those lost and their families, and to pray for the troops still fighting for freedom abroad.
Conservative Newsletter: We would like to start up a conservative newsletter that we will distribute around campus, at least once a month. The newsletter will contain articles and opinion pieces written by CR members. We have found that students often want to sound off about current political issues, but have no means to do so. The Troubadour (student newspaper) can usually only print one or two pieces. If you have any desire to write, please do so!
Movie Nights: We have a few conservative films/documentaries in mind, but please tell us if you have any suggestions!
Suggestions: We are of course open to any suggestions!
